Delawyer escapes with a reprimand

Luke Tonkin kissing bicep
Tonkin showing the kind of bicep kiss he encouraged Delawyer to imitate

Daniel Delawyer has escaped with a reprimand for his dance and bicep kiss after taking his fifth wicket against Grange in the D Grade last week. Delawyer, 16, has come up from the juniors and was a bit over-exuberant after ripping through the Grange batting attack with a combination of pace and swing.

Delawyer stopped mid pitch for a Jason Gillespie style dance before directing his bicep kiss to the fans sitting on the fine leg boundary, egged on by another new bowler Luke Tonkin. Started by club president Warren Ainscough, the bicep kiss has become quite popular, and Tonkin thought this an appropriate moment for it. Coach Brenton Wilson and D grade captain Doug Stevens have ensured us that Delawyer has been severely reprimanded and will think twice before engaging in any similar actions. Delawyer has remained silent on the issue apart from calling Tonkin a 'whack bastard' and saying that he 'did it for the fans who had supported him all day.'

Hopgood may wear the jacket

Rumours are rife that Cambell Hopgood may take the Pink Jacket away from Adam Beauchamp, whose explanation for being late to golf at Victor Harbor earned him the right to wear the jacket.

Hopgood was recently found in this photo by an unnamed source, and people around the club are beginning to wonder just which horse he will be on in the upcoming Melbourne Cup.

Matches washed out

Unfortunately all Adelaide Turf Cricket Association matches were called off on the weekend due to inclement weather, a shame for our A grade who were at 1/49 chasing a small total of 129 at Largs Bay against Port Districts.

However, the training session at Camden Beach Sports Centre was a success, with a good turnout playing indoor cricket, followed by a beach volleyball tournament. The volleyball was spectacularly won by A Grade captain Andrew Muller's team who showed great poise in the final against B Grade captain Graham Burton's side, who came back from a 13-4 deficit in the final to lose 15-13 in the end.

Wescombe playing A'sChad Wescombe behind the bar

Congratulations to batsman Chad Wescombe, who will play his first A grade game on Saturday. Wescombe made 48 not out in the 2nd innings against Flinders Uni in the B's, looking good with a pull shot for six being the highlight. With a couple of players missing from last games A grade side, he has made the step up.

Caire Factor proves decisive

Andrew Caire today notched up his maiden first class century for the Unley Cricket club, scoring 128 against Payneham in the F grade match at Payneham. It is a decisive break through for Caire, who had some success in both D and C grade cricket last season. Batting at 4, it was a flowing innings from the 17 year old, leading the side to a massive total of 334, also helped along by 16 year old Daniel Delawyer's 59 not out.

Unfortunately Caire's performance off the field hasn't been quite as good, earning the wrath of Pink Jacket selectors when he locked his keys in the boot of his car. This would have earnt a nomination by itself but the fact that he turned up to the club that Thursday with the keys around his neck made it all the more amusing.

Season off to a solid, if not spectacular start

Season 2003/04 officially started today, with some solid results from the days play. The A Grade match is truly in the balance, the score of 180 largely due to a last wicket partnership between fast bowlers Andrew Muller and Jody Hardenberg. The B Grade were also saved by some runs from the lower order, with 'Party' Pete Hanson scoring 21 not out, allowing them to get to a respectable total of 140 at Flinders Uni, before Warren Ainscough snared 3 wickets, leaving Flinders at 3/30 at the close of play.
